Favour Comprehensive College Wins Maiden Afeni Inter-Secondary School Football Tournament in Idiroko

IDIROKO, OGUN STATE – 

Favour Comprehensive College has emerged champion of the maiden edition of the Afeni Inter-Secondary School Football Tournament after defeating other participating schools in the grand finale held on Friday in Idiroko, Ogun State. 

The two-week competition, which featured 12 secondary schools from border communities, ended with an impressive display of football talent and youth participation.

The tournament, sponsored by the Acting Customs Area Controller of the Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun I Area Command, Deputy Comptroller Afeni, in partnership with Jonnyyeko College of Health Science and Technology, was organised as part of a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative aimed at engaging young people positively through sports.

 Organisers said the competition was designed to promote unity, encourage education, and discourage youths from engaging in illicit cross-border smuggling.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Deputy Comptroller Afeni said football remains a powerful tool for mentoring young people, developing their talents, and inspiring them to pursue brighter futures beyond their immediate communities. He noted that the initiative reflected the Nigeria Customs Service's commitment to youth development and community engagement in border areas.

Hundreds of students participated in the tournament as players, match officials, and supporters during the competition, which ran from July 13 to July 24, 2026. Educational authorities, youth groups, and community leaders also threw their weight behind the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that would help redirect young people toward productive activities while strengthening peaceful coexistence within the border communities.

At the end of the tournament, cash prizes, educational materials, and sporting equipment were presented to the winners, runners-up, and outstanding performers. Okanlawon Al-Amin of S.S. International School emerged the highest goal scorer with four goals, Olawale Saoban of Favour Comprehensive College was named Best Goalkeeper, while Rigobert of Holy Childhood

 Academy won the Best Player award. Organisers expressed optimism that the successful maiden edition would become an annual event to further promote sports, education, and youth empowerment across the Idiroko border corridor.
