Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested three suspected cult members in Agosasa, located in the Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State. The suspects, all adult males, were apprehended on Sunday morning while allegedly planning to unleash violence and disrupt the peace.
The arrest took place at the Agosasa market in the early hour of the day. According to the police, the suspects had gathered unlawfully and were conspiring to breach the peace, a common modus operandi of cult groups.
The men, identified as Aderounmu Quadri, Abideen idowu, aka ege, Oje Ismail, also known as "Pappy," were swiftly detained by officers who acted on intelligence reports about the potential threat in the area.
According to sources who spoke with journalists, local godfathers and influential figures are reportedly involved in orchestrating criminal activities in the town. These individuals are supplying firearms and other weapons to local hoodlums for their personal agendas. Once the hoodlums have carried out their operations, the weapons are returned to their sources, and at times, external criminals are brought in to collaborate with them.
A recent incident exposed the severity of the situation. Despite the presence of security operatives, a group of these hoodlums openly displayed their weapons and assaulted several young men in the community. Two victims are still hospitalized. This violent act, which occurred on a Sunday morning , further highlighted the need for stronger intervention to protect vulnerable individuals from such criminal groups.
‘’The violence continued in the market area when the external criminals clashed with the local hoodlums. The altercation escalated, even in the presence of the Amotekun and other security group. Market-goers contacted the police, and it was revealed that a known figure in the area, had already been in contact with authorities for the release of the suspects ‘’
. These criminal groups have been terrorizing the community for years back, and instead of directly confronting the perpetrators, the authorities often end up dealing with innocent individuals while the true criminals remain protected
The community is now facing the challenge of dealing with these persistent threats to safety and security.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that the trio was arrested during the operation. "The suspects were apprehended on Sunday morning and they are at the Anti-Cultism Department for further investigation,"
The police spokesperson emphasized that the suspects would be charged to court once the investigation is concluded. "The suspects are undergoing investigation and will be charged to court upon completion of the investigation," he stated, assuring the public that the authority determined to curb cult-related violence in the region.
The Agosasa community has long been plagued by various criminal activities, including frequent cult clashes, hoodlum violence, and incidents involving terrorists. This arrest marks another significant step in the Ogun State Police Command's ongoing efforts to combat the rise in lawlessness and ensure the safety of residents in the region.
Over the past few years, Ogun State has seen a surge in cult-related violence, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas like Agosasa. Cult groups, often composed of young men, have been responsible for numerous acts of terror, including armed robberies, extortion, killing, and violent clashes with rival groups believing sponsored by some god fathers and influencers. The police have reported several incidents where community members have fallen victim to these groups' criminal activities.

The arrest of the three suspects in Agosasa serves as a testament to the state's commitment to tackling cultism head-on, while also highlighting the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in curbing this pervasive issue.
