The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun I Command, has made a significant breakthrough in the fight against wildlife trafficking, seizing four live pangolins during a high-intensity patrol along the Yewamota–Igbooro axis in Ogun State. This successful operation, carried out on February 12, 2026, underscores the NCS's dedication to curbing illegal wildlife trade and trans-border crime.
Acting on credible intelligence, a Customs patrol team flagged down a motorcycle along the Yewamota–Igbooro and Ebute Igbooro corridor. Hidden inside wire mesh cages, four endangered pangolins were found securely concealed in a sack. The sophisticated concealment technique points to the involvement of a well-organized wildlife trafficking syndicate operating in the region.
Upon noticing the Customs officers, the suspected traffickers abandoned the motorcycle and fled into the nearby terrain, managing to escape arrest. Despite their evasion, the pangolins were rescued and handed over to the Wildlife Conservation Centre the following day, in accordance with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
The official handover was conducted by Assistant Comptroller Tajjudeen Bello, standing in for Acting Customs Area Controller Oladapo Afeni. During the handover, Afeni commended the patrol team for their professionalism and bravery. He reiterated the NCS's commitment to combating illegal wildlife trade and strengthening border security.
“This interception is a clear indication of our ongoing efforts to safeguard endangered species and maintain border security,” Afeni stated. He also issued a firm warning to wildlife traffickers, emphasizing that the NCS remains “battle-ready” to track down and prosecute offenders involved in wildlife smuggling.
