A technical team from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has completed an inspection of the Eba oil well in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area, marking a significant step toward the commencement of commercial drilling in the state. The visit is part of ongoing preparations, following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval for the exploration of oil in Ogun State.
The inspection was a collaborative effort, with NNPCL officials joined by representatives from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and national security agencies. The team conducted a thorough evaluation of the site to confirm its readiness for drilling, ensuring all technical and infrastructure requirements are met.
The visit underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to advancing oil exploration outside the traditional Niger Delta region.
Led by Hussein Aliyu, Project Coordinator for Enserv, the inspection team included key experts such as Wasiu Adeniyi, Onwugba Kelechi, and Engr. Rabiu M. Audu, among others. The team’s mission was to ensure that all operational standards and security protocols were in place, setting the stage for the next phase of drilling operations.
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State hailed the development as a major milestone for the state, emphasizing the potential for job creation, economic growth, and enhanced federal presence in Ogun’s coastal communities. The governor expressed confidence that the Eba oil well would serve as a catalyst for the state’s socio-economic transformation.
The project is seen as part of Nigeria’s broader strategy to diversify its oil production base and reduce reliance on the Niger Delta. With security personnel already stationed at the site for over 18 months, and with positive geological reports confirming the presence of hydrocarbons, all eyes are now on the successful commencement of commercial drilling and its subsequent impact on both the state and the national economy.
