The crisis within the Ogun State chapter of the African Democratic Congress deepened on Monday as two factions of the party conducted separate governorship primaries in Abeokuta, producing different candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Both factions, while addressing journalists after the exercises, announced separate winners, with one group declaring Collins Ogundipe as its governorship candidate and the other presenting Jimi Lawal as the party’s flag bearer.
The factions maintained that their respective primaries were valid and conducted across the twenty local government areas of the state.
The faction that produced Collins Ogundipe said the exercise was supervised by a six-man Ogun ADC Governorship Primary Committee led by Adeniyi Adams, with officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission present at the venue.
Three aspirants contested the election, including Jimi Lawal, Collins Ogundipe and Abolaji Odusina. According to the committee, Ogundipe polled 9,370 votes to defeat Lawal, who secured 6,812 votes, while Odusina garnered 4,349 votes.
Meanwhile, the rival faction announced Jimi Lawal as winner of its own governorship primary, saying the process was supervised by the Secretary of the Ogun Primary Election Committee, Adebimpe Elijah Adelowo.
The faction disclosed that Lawal scored 19,418 votes to emerge victorious, while Collins Ogundipe polled 5,775 votes and Bolaji Odusina secured 4,825 votes.
Speaking after his emergence, Collins Ogundipe pledged to work towards uniting members of the party and strengthening the ADC ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State.
Both factions also confirmed that documents and results from their separate primaries had been forwarded to the national headquarters of the African Democratic Congress in Abuja for further action.
