Ogun State marked its 50th anniversary on Thursday with a spectacular cultural carnival and road show that brought the streets of Abeokuta to life. The celebrations, which drew thousands of residents, featured colourful floats, music, and traditional dances, celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the state.
The procession, a highlight of the day's events, included six beautifully decorated floats, each representing one of Ogun's major regions—Remo, Ijebu, Yewa, and Egba (RIYE). Additionally, a symbolic fish float honoured the state’s riverine communities, underscoring Ogun’s diverse cultural fabric.
Governor Dapo Abiodun, speaking at a reception held at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, praised the resilience and hard work of Ogun’s people. He stressed that the state’s rapid development was a direct result of the collective effort of its citizens, as well as the leadership’s commitment to progress. "This carnival is a reflection of our cultural strength and organizational capacity, showing the world that Ogun State is not only the gateway to Nigeria’s prosperity but also a thriving hub for culture and tourism,” he said.
The governor also acknowledged the contributions of past leaders and civil servants who laid the groundwork for Ogun's current successes. "Ogun State's achievements are built on decades of perseverance and sacrifice. Our pride in this state is at an all-time high," Governor Abiodun declared. He emphasized that the golden jubilee celebrations were designed to promote unity, pride, and resilience among Ogun’s people.
The grand procession, which stretched from Oke-Igbein through Omida and Oke-Ilewo to the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, featured over 3,000 participants, including traditional dancers, drummers, masqueraders, and performers, making the celebration an unforgettable spectacle. The event, with its cultural displays, acrobatic feats, and lively music, showcased Ogun's growing prominence as a cultural and tourism powerhouse.
