The Ogun State Government has approved the award of a ₦6,118,098,154.70 contract for the construction of a new complex to house the Abeokuta Division of the Court of Appeal. The decision was taken at the State Executive Council meeting held today, marking a major milestone in the state’s judicial development agenda.
The project will see the development of a modern court complex on a 2.6-hectare parcel of land adjoining the existing State Judiciary Complex in Olipakala Village via Kobape, within the Judiciary Cluster along the Abeokuta–Sagamu Expressway in Abeokuta. The new facility is designed to strengthen the administration of justice and provide a conducive environment for appellate proceedings.
According to a review by the Ogun State Ministry of Justice, a significant number of appeals currently handled by the Court of Appeal’s Ibadan Division originate from Ogun State. The absence of a division within the state has placed financial and logistical strain on litigants and legal practitioners, while also contributing to delays in the resolution of cases. Establishing the Abeokuta Division is expected to ease these challenges and bring appellate adjudication closer to the people.
In readiness for the division’s take-off, the state government has already provided key infrastructure. Six duplexes were constructed on 4,359 square metres of land in Ibara Housing GRA to serve as official residences for justices, while twenty bungalows at Prince Court Estate, Kobape, have been designated for support staff. In 2025, approval was granted by the President of the Court of Appeal for the division to commence operations, following a special sitting in Abeokuta in May 2024 where about ten panels disposed of over 150 appeals within three days.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the new complex is scheduled to take place in the coming days, with construction expected to be completed within twelve months. The Ministry of Justice reaffirmed its commitment to justice sector reforms aimed at deepening access to justice, strengthening institutions, and ensuring efficient judicial service delivery across Ogun State.
