CIP Applauds Ogun State for Suspending Awujale Selection Process Amid Allegations of Corruption

A socio-professional group, the Committee of Ijebu Professionals (CIP), has lauded the Ogun State Government for its timely intervention in suspending the ongoing selection process for a new Awujale of Ijebuland. The decision, which was conveyed through a letter from the Ijebu Ode Local Government to the kingmakers and ruling houses, was hailed as a crucial step towards restoring integrity to what had become a controversial and polarized process.

In a statement signed by Arc. Temitayo Onabule, the group’s President, and Prof. Jide Oreoluwa Olabinjo, its Publicity Secretary, the CIP emphasized that the government’s intervention was essential to avoid the potential fallout from a selection process that had been plagued by allegations of corruption, influence-peddling, and dishonesty. They expressed gratitude for the swift action taken by the state authorities, which they believed was in the best interest of Ijebuland.

The CIP revealed that the process had increasingly lost public trust, with rumors and accusations circulating about the influence of money and powerful interests in the selection. The group stated that, regardless of the veracity of these claims, the damage had already been done, tarnishing the credibility of what should have been a transparent and revered selection of a traditional ruler for Ijebuland.

While acknowledging that Governor Dapo Abiodun had refrained from directly intervening in the process in order to ensure fairness and transparency, the CIP noted that the growing controversies made it evident that the process had become compromised. According to the group, allowing the process to continue unchecked would risk the selection of a monarch who would not be deserving of the prestigious Awujale stool.

The CIP called on the Ogun State Government to closely monitor the process going forward, ensuring that it is carried out with integrity and in the public interest. Furthermore, the group urged the government to launch a thorough investigation into the allegations of bribery and undue influence, to safeguard the future of Ijebuland's leadership and preserve the integrity of the Awujale institution.
